bdBLOG: See yourself in a more positive light

Women are their own worst beauty critics. In fact, only four per cent of women around the world consider themselves beautiful.” With this discovery, set out to conduct a social experiment to prove women are more beautiful than they think.

The brand first became renowned for its commitment to building positive self-esteem with the launch of its Evolution Commercial in 2006, which showed an ordinary-looking girl transform into a model through the use of Photoshop.

With their new Real Beauty Sketches campaign, Dove is once more empowering women to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin via a three-minute ad released on YouTube on Monday.

The campaign sees a series of women sit behind a curtain and describe the details of the structure of their face to an FBI-trained forensic artist Gil Zamora, who can’t see them. Zamora then sketches a portrait of what each individual woman has described. The women are then asked to describe the facial features of another person participating in the experiment, with Zamora then also sketching that picture.

At the end of the video, the artist reveals the two sketches – one of the participant and one of their partner. The outcome shows that participants were seen to describe themselves in a more negative light, while their partner focused on all the positive attributes.

This social experiment is a reflection of what is happening in society everyday. While women can only see the beauty in their friends, they will straight away pick out their own flaws. While I am as guilty of doing this as the next woman, I am trying to make a concerted effort to focus on my positive attributes rather than giving all my attention to the bad.
