bdBLOG: The food to bid farewell to

It’s no secret that what you eat has a big effect on your skin. If you make a habit of watching what you put in your mouth you might be able to pinpoint the exact foods that cause your skin to breakout. If you pay less attention and don’t notice the foods that are forming a huge lump on your chin, it might be because the food that’s causing your zit is very common and hard to pinpoint.

Say hello to my friend wheat, a very common ingredient that existed in about 50 per cent of my daily food intake. Now imagine how I felt when I discovered this friend has turned its back on me after spending so much time together. Yep, wheat has done that and more - I found out it’s not only affecting my skin but my joints and blood sugar as well.

While I’m not a dietician, simple research and a visit to the GP will tell you an intolerance to a food can cause adverse reactions. Some, like wheat, are bad for our skin because it’s made up of sugars, which can lead to the activation of sebum-producing glands resulting in acne and oily skin.

It affects joints through wheat intolerances (celiac disease), which is often under-diagnosed.  According to Wheat Belly author William Davis, wheat-induced joint is most common in the wrists and fingers, but can also be present in the back, hips and knees. And because wheat eventually turns to sugar, it has also been known to raise blood sugar levels even more than regular table sugar can.

So it is time to for me spend less time hanging out with this friend? As much as I love thick-cut toast covered in melted butter, the variety of negative effects it has on my body is enough to cut playtime down a lot.
