More Australians are planning to shop the Black Friday sales than ever before, according to new research by Finder, Australia’s most visited comparison site.
A nationally representative survey of 1,015 respondents revealed 31% of Australians – equivalent to over 6 million people – plan to shop the Black Friday sales. In comparison, just over 1 in 4 (26%) Aussies plan to shop on Boxing Day.
It’s the first year that more Australians are planning to splurge on Black Friday over the Boxing Day sales. When Finder asked Australians the same question in 2020, more people said they would shop on Boxing Day (29%) than Black Friday (26%).
Finder’s research shows the average Aussie is predicted to spend $197 on the upcoming sales season – totalling a whopping $3.8 billion across Australia.
Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, said many were looking forward to snapping up a bargain this Black Friday.
“Spending has been cut largely due to the pandemic but as things start to return to normal lots of Australians are excited to splash some cash. There are some serious savings to be had this side of Christmas, with the Black Friday sales this year tipped to be epic."
The biggest pet peeve when it comes to online shopping is long delivery wait times (51%), followed by high shipping costs (50%).
Cooke said online shopping was set to gain even more momentum as some shoppers avoid the crowds.
“Lockdowns have significantly fast tracked the uptake of online shopping. This has, in turn, put extra strain on distribution systems – so it's important to order early to avoid delays.
“With only 5 weeks left until Christmas, now is the time to plan your wish list and compare retailers for the best offers.”
