Since day dot, fragrance has been an important part of beauty regimens. What began in ancient days with the dabbing and wafting of frankincense and myrrh onto the body has evolved to encompass every scent imaginable, no matter how trivial (or perhaps unexpected). To help guide you through the world of fragrance, BD has collected a bundle of brands that are tantalising our noses this season with their scents:

The daughter of famed Spanish artist Picasso has dabbled in jewellery design but may be most renowned for her 1980s fragrance launch. The self-titled Paloma Picasso EDP Spray was formed for the ‘strong woman’ blending coriander, angelica and carnation with jasmine and hyacinth. She was perhaps her own best promoter - renowned for her penchant for the pairing of a red lip and heavy perfume, of which she said: “In the same way that a jewel can fill the eyes with wonder, fragrance can intoxicate the senses and reveal unknown pleasures and new sensations.”

Granddaughter of beauty magnate Estée Lauder, Aerin has created her own line of fragrance and accompanying body products that is intended to be for the graceful, modern woman. The perfume range numbers eight and was inspired by destinations and memories that have remained special to Lauder. The names of the fragrances embody a plethora of notable florals, with the line including Ikat Jasmine, Amber Musk, Evening Rose, Gardenia Rattan, Iris Meadow, Lilac Path, Rose de Grasse and Waterlily Sun.

The man known as enfant terrible of the French fashion world has formed a reputation for producing statement-making pieces in his lengthy career, favoured by pop stars Madonna and Kylie Minogue. Gaultier’s outlandish creations extended to the perfume world in 1993 with the launch of Classique. Expanding into an offering for men with Le Male, Gaultier’s fragrance line may actually be as notorious for its bottles (shaped as mannequins) as it is the scents inside.

Stella McCartney’s design prowess has moved her away from the shadows of her father Paul of The Beatles and into the limelight. McCartney’s foray away from the runways and into fragrance has remained small but strong, with Stella her best-seller. Perhaps as a reflection of her passion for environmental issues, her fragrances harbour a liking for the floral notes of rose, peony and lily of the valley.

French couture house Lanvin rose in in 1889, launched by Jeanne Lanvin who was notorious for her detailed embroidery and beadwork. It’s the flapper era of the 1920s that really cemented the status of the house, helping to launch the first fragrance in 1925 - the hero of which was and remains Arpege, a rich floral of bergamot and sandalwood, housed in a decidedly deco black and gold bottle.

Cuban-American designer Narciso Rodriguez embraces a clear love of minimalism in his creations. It’s a notion carried on in the brand’s fragrance line in name and image - with For Her launched in 2003. Rodriguez’s love of musk features at the heart of every scent in the line, offering products for both men and women, as well as additional body products and limited editions.

The bad boy of football, Cristiano Ronaldo has amassed an empire of merchandise. The star player of Real Madrid is notorious for his metrosexual ways and penchant for luxury, so it makes perfect sense that he has launched a debut fragrance with Cristiano Ronaldo Legacy. Glamour is at the heart of this scent, which incorporates lavender, apple and cinnamon in a sleek gold-accented bottle.

Australian singer Jessica Mauboy has recently launched her first fragrance in partnership with BrandPoint. The fragrance and bottle have been specially designed to reflect Mauboy’s hometown of Darwin, as well as her down-to-earth personality. The fresh, floral fragrance features waterlily, magnolia and frangipani, housed in an aqua-emerald bottle that mirrors the colour of the ocean surrounding the top end.

King of the mods, Paul Smith the designer is strongly associated with British tradition, imagination and a sense of humour. The fragrance arm of the brand was launched in 2000 as a fun alternative to traditional perfume. There is a different fragrance option to cover all preferences, ranging from rose to spicy, and woods-inspired.

Dame Vivienne Westwood is an English personality intertwined with the 1970s punk movement and the band the Sex Pistols. Continuing to be a proponent of shock-value through the years, the outspoken advocate for social change and designer launched a fragrance line for women to accompany her couture, ready-to-wear, and accessory offerings.
