New year, new you, and maybe a new job if that’s what you’re searching for.
While the beauty industry holds a variety of job titles and encompasses a plethora of roles, there are key things one can do to ensure that they’re able to get ahead.
Speaking with Cosmetics Business, CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) explained its five golden rules for career development in beauty; with CEW president Caroline Neville explaining “At a time when the beauty industry is constantly changing, it is more important than ever to ensure you have good contacts and essential expert knowledge across the field.”
1. Be positive
Unsurprisingly, your attitude in the workplace will be noticed by both colleagues and others in the industry alike: “Adopting an optimistic-attitude will have a positive impact on your relationship with colleagues and management staff as they will appreciate working alongside an up-beat peer.”
2. Ask for help
It’s time to beat the stigma that asking for help implies someone is weak, uncertain or incapable, “…This often leads to an impossible attempt to tackle work load without support and inevitably ends up with an individual feeling over-worked, over-stressed and making avoidable mistakes.
“Asking for help is imperative if you wish to learn and grow within the workplace.”
3. Show respect
It is inevitable you will encounter a colleague, client, or business who is difficult to work with at some point during your career. However, “respect for your colleagues and management team is arguably the most important element of maintaining positive and productive workplace relationships.
“At these times it is imperative to put personal feelings aside and learn to handle the individual in a respectful manner.”
4. Set goals
It’s always important to have something to work towards in order to not stay stagnate.
“Whether it’s a long term promotion that’s a few years away; or simply a desire to master a new skill in the work place - putting these goals on paper will give you a sense of direction and will help you to stay focussed.”
5. Look after yourself
You can’t be expected to look after greater responsibility if you can’t look after yourself. Rest, relax and recharge for optimum productivity at work, and remember that it’s OK to switch off your email sometimes.
