Juggling her time between stints freelancing for various publications, Rachael Mannell is one busy journalist. Now, the beauty writer is adding another feather to her cap with news she will be a monthly contributor on Mary Zavaglia's US website, www.maryzavaglia.com.
Mannell will head up an Australian-focused section titled Australian Beauty Bulletin – by Rachael Mannell. While currently living in the US, Zavaglia is a well-known name in the Australian beauty media landscape having previously worked as the beauty editor on Woman's Day for 15 years.
Here, BD chats to Mannell about the new role.
What will your role involve?
I'll be covering emerging Aussie trends, my personal product loves of the month, standout beauty events and also reviewing treatments (the tough part).
What are you most excited about the position?
Mary wants 'me' to come though in the writing - I think the very honest part. It's nice to be trusted like that and to have that sort of freedom.
Are you currently involved in other regular contributor roles?
I've moved from my beauty news editor role for Gritty Pretty magazine to write some bigger features. My latest for GP was a profile piece on three skincare specialists and their entrepreneurial journey as business owners. I loved writing that one. I also write regular features for BRIDE magazine which is based out of Melbourne. Recently, I 've branched out part-time as a consultant to Roxy at Sweaty Betty PR across some of her beauty brands. It's a short-term role and I'm loving it. Partly because I get to watch Rox operate (she's a force) and partly because I can share my beauty knowledge. It helps that I am paid to contact my beauty mates on a weekly basis too!
What direction are you hoping to take your career in 2016?
Work keeps popping up out of the blue and I'm thoroughly enjoying the variety, so my plan is to continue freelancing. I also want to get more involved with our Highlands community. I'm property obsessed so spend a good deal of time researching this area with ideas ticking over. Watch this space.
