Keith Urban to launch scent

Keith Urban is venturing into the world of men’s fragrance, with the Aussie singer set to launch his first scent, Phoenix, in September. The meaning behind the name of the fragrance is two-fold for Urban – not only does the Phoenix rising from the ashes refer to his somewhat challenging past, but it’s also a nod to the Hopi Indian thunderbird tattoo on his left forearm.

The thunderbird obviously has close ties to the phoenix – the symbolism of the phoenix,” says the father-of-two. I’ve always loved symbolism and mythology, the symbolism of the phoenix being something that succumbs to the challenges and burns in the fire, but is then resurrected from the ashes and rises up from the ashes even stronger than before.”

Having dealt with addictions to cocaine and alcohol, Urban admitted that he could definitely relate to the what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” aspect of the story of the phoenix.

Phoenix will be stocked in David Jones and Target stores in Australia from mid-September. While Urban and the fragrance’s licensee Boom LLC wouldn’t discuss projected sales figures, industry sources are tipping that Phoenix could do upward of US$10m at retail in its first year.
