Although it might not be mentioned on any of the film posters, there’s another star of Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby – John Frieda hair products.
Hair designer Kerry Warn used John Frieda products to create the signature early 20th century-style looks as worn by the cast and hundreds of extras. Warn worked with Luhrmann and two-time Academy Award-winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin to design hairstyles inspired by the looks of the Jazz Age, in which the film is set.
The ‘20s have been done so beautifully in so many films,” says Warn. After discussions, we decided to keep a modern twist, that we’d do our own interpretation of the ‘20s.”
For the large party scenes in the film, Warn and his team created hairstyles for up to 300 female extras. Long hair was styled into finger waves with the help of John Frieda Frizz-Ease Clearly Defined Styling Gel. The girls could dance – and they were brilliant dancers – even do cartwheels, and their hair wasn’t going anywhere,” Warn says of the look.
Warn said making the film in 3D brought with it new challenges that you might get away with in a traditional 2D film. With 3D, you have to be so careful about stray hairs,” Warn explains. I was able to control the look with John Frieda Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray. It was a really good standby!”
