The internet may have given Australians access to goods all over the world, but it seems that when it comes to online shopping, they’d still prefer to stick with homegrown product.
The latest findings from Roy Morgan Research found 64 per cent of Australian online shoppers purchased locally, while 39 per cent bought products from overseas websites in the 12 months to September 2014. The research also discovered 38 per cent of Australians aged over 14 bought one or more products over the internet in an average four-week period.
"There’s no doubt about it: the internet has revolutionised the way we shop, giving us unprecedented access to the global marketplace. But in great news for Aussie online retailers, the majority of Australians prefer to buy from local rather than overseas websites," says Roy Morgan Research executive Geoffrey Smith.
Of the 51 surveyed product categories, only six were more commonly purchased from an overseas website: video games and consoles, eBooks, books, jewellery and watches, TV show downloads, and fashion accessories. For the other 45 categories, local websites were the preferred purchasing platform.
The top-selling products sold online locally are tickets to movies, shows and events, travel items such as tickets and accommodation, and fast food/meals.
