A new study has found that Facebook is rapidly losing its tween and teen users to Snapchat as well as to the Facebook-owned Instagram.
eMarketer found that Facebook usage among 12-to-17-year-olds has significantly dropped, while Snapchat usage is on the rise. Specifically, the number of teens and tweens using Facebook has dropped by 3.4 per cent while Snapchat’s user numbers have risen by 41 per cent.
eMarketer forecasting analyst, Oscar Orozco, dissected the results, saying: “We see teens and tweens migrating to Snapchat and Instagram. Both platforms have found success with this demographic since they are more aligned with how they communicate – using visual content.
“Outside of the Facebook-cutters, teens and tweens remaining on Facebook seem to be less engaged – logging in less frequently and spending less time on the platform. At the same time, we now have Facebook-nevers, many children aging into the tween demographic that appear to be overlooking Facebook altogether, yet still engaging with Facebook-owned Instagram.”
