Instagram fights back against fake followers and likes

Instagram status has more influence than ever in today’s digital savvy society, which is why so many are turning to inauthentic likes, followers and comments to increase their social media presence.

However, the photo and video sharing network is now fighting back against people and businesses using third-party applications to boost their engagement, with Instagram revealing it is using machine learning tools as an identification method.

Messages will be sent within the app, informing those accounts that the follows, likes and comments they have left on other accounts have been removed. They will also be asked to change their passwords to help prevent third-party apps from using their login details.

“People who use these types of apps share their username and password, and their accounts are sometimes used by third-party apps for inauthentic likes, follows and comments,” Instagram said in a blog post. “Not only does this introduce bad behavior into the Instagram community, it also makes these accounts less secure. We also know some people may have unknowingly shared their login credentials with a third-party app … These new measures will be ongoing, and accounts that continue to use third-party apps to grow their audience may see their experience impacted.”

Instagram also added it is planning to take “additional measures” to help tackle inauthentic activity in the near future.
