Earlier this month saw major supermarkets Woolworths and Coles announce they will be banning microbeads from their shelves, with Adore Beauty yesterday announcing it is following suit. The Australian prestige beauty e-tailer has immediately commenced a phase-out of products containing plastic microbeads.
“We have advised all our suppliers that we will not be ordering any products containing microbeads, effective immediately. We do pride ourselves on empowering consumers and letting them make their own choices, but with the microbeads, we feel there is an environmental imperative to do our bit to get them off the market as soon as possible,” says Adore Beauty founder and CEO Kate Morris.
“Many of our brand partners have already started reformulating to remove plastic from their products, and we want to encourage the rest to follow suit. There are plenty of alternative natural ingredients that are just as effective but won’t harm the environment.”
Microbeads are tiny plastic spheres found in some personal care products. Scientific reports have discovered the beads are not filtered by wastewater treatment systems, meaning they end up in waterways and oceans.
