Three key makeup trends from NYFW

Welcoming us to fashion month once again was New York, and what a week of wintery glamour it's been. Turning straight to beauty, we saw pared back ethereal looks, bold lips and primary colours on and around the eyes. Here's a closer look at three makeup trends that made their way down the New York catwalks for autumn/winter 17.

Minimal ethereal
The stand out ethereal look had to be at Proenza Schouler where barely any makeup was used save for a sweep of white eyeliner. Foundation wasn't even present, rather Tata Harper prepped the skin, double cleansing each model with the brand's nourishing oil and regenerating cleanser. This was followed by a resurfacing mask that left the girls with the ultimate post-facial glow.

Again at Monse, little makeup was used other than SK-II's brightening Aura Essence. At Altuzarra, skin was boosted only by a touch of M.A.C's Extra Dimension Strobe Blush in Into The Pink while Marchesa girls got an all over pink tint with lipstick on the cheeks and eyes.

Rainbow eyes and lower lashes
Pat McGrath at colour-loving Anna Sui combined bold blue glittery lids with dark red lips - a throwback to the 90s if ever we've seen one. Frosty eyes were the vibe at Derek Lam from the cool-toned eyeshadows like silver and purple. On the opposite side of the colour spectrum, there were peach-coloured smokey eyes at Bibhu Mohapatra, pinky-metallic smokey eyes at The Blonds and thick pink eyeliner (combined with bright sherbet eyeshadow shades) at Oscar de la Renta.

More dramatic eye makeup came in the form of a block of opaque paint in red, white or yellow at Zadig and Voltaire and something similarly graphic at Prabal Gurung and Desigual. Apparently Tom Pecheux let the models pick which eyeshadow colour they wanted to wear from a selection of six jewel-toned M.A.C pigments at Brandon Maxwell.

Lashes were Twiggy-inspired and lower lashes were all the rage. Some were painted in primary coloured mascara and at Jeremy Scott there were super long (fake) bottom eyelashes. At Brock Collection Tadashi Shoji went one step further and added glitter.

Rich lips
Very, very berry: the most interesting version of which was at Rosie Assoulin where makeup artist James Kaliardos blurred the edges of the burgundy lipstick with a cotton bud. A variation of this wintery hue was also seen at La Perla, Jill Stuart, Pamela Roland, Marc Jacobs, Phillip Plein, Novis (this was closer to a dark magenta), Badgley Mischka and Anna Sui.

If lips weren't berry or burgundy they were still bright and velvety in shades such as tango orange and red.
