5 misconceptions about injectables

Despite the growing popularity of injectables, there are still copious myths about these cosmetic treatments. Just the mention of Botox can instil fear and confusion in the inexperienced user. In fact, The Face Place Nursing Team Leader Emma Lindley says this fear is enough for patients to delay treatment for several years, or they go without altogether. To help set the record straight Emma reveals the top 5 misconceptions about injectable treatments.

You won’t look strange afterwards

Perhaps the number one fear surrounding injectables, there is always the worry that you’ll come out looking unnatural. While it’s possible to get an overdone, poorly executed result when in the wrong hands, when done right the outcome should be practically undetectable, balanced and natural. Your cosmetic nurse will have your best interests in mind to ensure the treatment enhances what you already have. A consultation should alleviate any worries you have about treatments.

It won’t be as painful as you think

The anticipation of pain is often worse than the injection itself, explains Emma. With treatments like Botox and dermal fillers, there are measures put in place to make sure any discomfort is reduced – from distraction techniques such as using a stress ball, to applying ice and topical anaesthetic cream for certain areas. Everyone has a different pain tolerance, but treatments can be personalised to best suit your needs. Speaking from personal experience, Emma says she finds Botox “a little stingy” while dermal fillers are more “weird” than sore.

The treatment you want may not be what you actually need

Social media can often give an unrealistic expectation of cosmetic treatments. While your heart may be set on a particular treatment, it won’t always be the right one for you. The before and after photos you see on Instagram and Facebook are often “a one-dimensional view or cropped and taken in a specific way to highlight a specific result”, says Emma.

During consultation, your entire face will be assessed from all angles where treatments will be suggested for what you need. “If we suggest treating your cheeks to assist with your nasolabial folds, it’s because we understand the science of ageing and the art of how to make you look beautiful.”

You won’t need to take out a bank loan to afford it

Treatment plans should be looked at as a marathon rather than a 100m sprint, says Emma. While the upfront costs discussed during a consultation can seem extensive, if you spread out treatments over a period of time they become more manageable. The outcome is often better, too!

You are never obliged to have a treatment after consultation

“A cosmetic consultation is your opportunity to find out what options are available, what our experts recommend and price points." When proceeding with treatment, you should be fully informed and confident with your decision – you don’t have to go through with a treatment if you feel unsure after a consultation.
