He only founded his blog 12 months ago, but editor Simon Proietto is already making a name for himself. In an industry where men are few and far between, Proietto’s passion and expertise has made him a familiar face on the Australian beauty blogger scene. So much so that he recently decided to launch The Bloggers Collective - a community where he helps bloggers with everything from getting their blogs up and running to giving them advice on media releases.
We tracked Proietto down to find out more about The Skincare Obsessive and The Bloggers Collective.
When did you launch The Skincare Obsessive?
I launched the site in March 2014 because I wanted to keep myself busy outside of my retail job. I kept getting asked by friends and people on social media about skincare and beauty products, so I decided to relay that onto a website.
What was behind your decision to launch the blog?
I always wanted a career in the beauty industry but I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. I started to read other people’s blogs and I thought to myself, ‘I could do this’.
How has the industry reacted to your blog?
I have had an amazing and sometimes overwhelming response from the beauty industry. I think everyone that I’ve worked with can see the passion I have for beauty.
How does The Skincare Obsessive differ from other beauty blogs?
I think the fact that I’m a guy in the Australian beauty blogging world. A lot of women ask me what their boyfriends should be using and I think they like a guy’s perspective. I like to talk to clinic owners and do stories on their salons, which I think is quite different. I also have a strong focus on medical grade skincare.
Do you think there is a big space in the market for a blog written by a male?
I believe there is. Women respect men working in the beauty industry and like to hear what they have to say. I also think it’s more comfortable for some men, as there are issues only men can understand.
Are most of your readers females or males?
I have a few male readers but they are mostly women.
What has been your blogging highlight?
The biggest highlight has to be working with amazing brands and knowing they trust me to represent their brand in the best way possible. Also, when I was invited to attend the launch of Lara Bingle's new line, sitting in a room with the most reputable bloggers was an amazing experience.
What is in store for the blog in 2015?
The blog is always growing, I'm just going to keep putting out great content and meeting people. I would love to have more brand-focused posts and hopefully - fingers crossed! - get signed with an agency and start making a living from my site.
Can you tell me a bit about The Bloggers Collective?
The Bloggers Collective is quite a personal thing for me. I wanted to create a space where like-minded people can support each other. I try to post inspirational quotes and send good vibes out into the universe.
Why did you decide to launch it?
I’m always asked about how to make it as a blogger, how to survive in the industry, how to make a media kit and so on, so I wanted to put the message out there that I'm here to help. My goal is to help people to achieve the success I have had while blogging, and inspire young entrepreneurs.
How do bloggers take part in it?
There is an Instagram page (@thebloggerscollective) I’m working on, but they can also email me (simonproietto@hotmail.com). I’m always up for a chat!
Do you get many enquiries from other bloggers?
I get a lot of emails from bloggers. Most are just starting out and want hints and tips, and some want skincare advice.
How will you be promoting The Bloggers Collective?
Through social media, the blog for it and hopefully through word of mouth.
What are your top tips for success in the beauty blogging industry?
- Be professional at all times. Even at events, I never drink too much. I always introduce myself to the host and stay professional.
- Answer every email, even if it's something you don't like. You never know what else that company might offer.
- Only write about things you love. Your reader always knows when you’re writing about something you’re not passionate about.
- Don't be disheartened if your blog doesn't pick up straight away - just keep at it.
- Be yourself.
- Congratulate yourself for every single achievement, no matter how big or small.
- Make a to do list and tick it off - this has been the biggest thing for me. No matter how smart you are, as soon as you receive a product or are asked to write about something, write it down and tick it off.
- Have fun! Really. As hard work as it is to be a blogger, remember to enjoy yourself.
- Meet people face-to-face rather than email as much as you can.
- Keep a list of all the PR people you’re in touch with and what brands they represent. Also, note the products you have on hand and what you need to review.
- Manage your time. At the end of the day, you need to figure out the best time to write or take photos. If you work 9am-5pm, maybe write from 7am-8am before work - just find what works for you.
