BD Talks: Double Cleansing

According to the experts, double cleansing is the step in your skincare routine you never knew you needed...but definitely do.

Referred to as “step zero” by Dermalogica New Zealand’s head of education Caroline Parker, double cleansing is crucial more than ever in today’s world where environmental pollutants are rife.

The process of double cleansing involves using a cleansing oil, balm or micellar water to break down make-up, SPF, sebum and residue build-up from throughout the day.

“The first layer of build-up is removed, allowing the second, prescribed cleanser to remove any leftover traces and impurities for a professional level of clean. Skin is left soft, nourished and ready to receive the benefits of your regular skin care regimen,” says Parker in reference to Dermalogica’s newest launch .

Research also shows that when skin isn't thoroughly cleaned, it’s difficult for skin to absorb active ingredients beyond the surface layer.

So, what product should you use first?

It depends on your skin type but oils and balms have the most efficacy when it comes to “really getting in there”, particularly if you wear a lot of make-up. Dermalogica’s PreCleanse and PreCleanse Balm activate and emulsify on contact with water, attracting and dissolving the layer of build-up that typically blocks your regular cleanser (step 1) from doing its best work.
