Responsible for transforming the smiles of beauty vloggers Shani Grimmond, Lauren Curtis and Danielle Mansutti, not to mention the girls from Australia’s Next Top Model, there’s no arguing that Dr Angelo Lazaris is top dog of the teeth world in Australia.
With a reputation as one of Sydney’s most respected general and cosmetic dentists, teeth whitening brand and Veneers decided Dr Lazaris was the ideal ambassador to represent their brand. A job Dr Lazaris was only too thrilled to take on as he's been using their product his whole career.
Here, Dr Lazaris answers all our questions on signing with the two brands, celebrity clients, and the nitty gritty of teeth whitening...
Why did you decide to sign on as an ambassador for Edelweiss and Opalescence?
Simply because they are quality products that I’m intimately familiar with. I have spent a lot of time with the developers of Edelweiss and they are truly passionate about this innovative product that makes sophisticated aesthetic and restorative procedures accessible to dentists and their patients. There are literally hundreds of whitening products on the market, and the truth is that most professionally-administered products will work. Opalescence differs because it minimises sensitivity, the most common side-effect of whitening.
What does your ambassador role involve?
To date it’s meant a lot of travelling! I’ve been on a lecture tour of Australia and New Zealand recently, and locked in for several other international engagements in 2016. I think my role is best suited as an educator to dentists and allowing them to make the best decisions for their patients.
Have you worked on any celebrity patients?
A number of them actually … although that was never really my aim. I won’t breach confidentiality, but many of them are great advocates and you can find their stories easily enough with some simple Googling. Okay, one story … Tim Dormer from Big Brother famously put his wisdom teeth up for sale on eBay after a happy gas-inspired session. The site quickly shut him down for trading in body parts! Was a good story in the papers the next day.
What is the most common treatment people ask you for?
Teeth whitening, veneers and Invisalign teeth straightening. These procedures can produce stunning results either alone or in combination.
How many shades of white more than their natural teeth should clients go?
There is no set rule. The effects of whitening are dependent on time and concentration, and the inherent ability of the tooth structure to whiten. Ultimately, whitening is self-limiting, so it’s not that easy to overdo it.
What is the youngest and oldest age people can get their teeth whitened at?
There are no set parameters based on age. Adult teeth mature during the teenage years, and enamel undergoes no structural change. Teeth whitening has been proven to be completely safe. More importantly than age, the health of the teeth and gums are more important variables.
Can you ever go too white?
You CAN overdo it if you continue to whiten. Teeth have a tendency to take on a blueish, unnatural hue if you whiten them too much.
What's your top advice for people wanting whiter teeth?
Get them professionally whitened. There are so many online, infomercial and stalls that offer whitening, but without the rigorous testing and protective measures that accompany dental products, there is a real risk of unpredictable results or damage to the soft tissues of the mouth and throat.
What's the most common tooth issue/problem you are presented with?
Overwhelmingly, people seek me out when they are unhappy with and/or embarrassed about their smiles.
Have you noticed teeth are now going a bit more natural (but enhanced) ie. Jess Hart teeth rather than Heidi Montag?
Yes, I’m a great fan of “perfect imperfection” and a lot of my patients are particularly interested in achieving natural-looking smiles.
What teeth do patients idolise?
You’d be surprised at the variety of things people find attractive … beauty is so subjective. But unfortunately, there are still too many people yearning for ridiculously white, straight and flat teeth.
Lastly, what is it about Opalescence and Edelweiss that makes them superior to their competitors?
I’ve got a whole 80-minute lecture that covers most of this! In short, Opalescence is highly effective and is highly aqueous, minimising the incidence and severity of sensitivity that can affect whitening procedures. Unlike many other systems, it also doesn’t depend on a light, so it is more cost effective for in-chair procedures. The new Opalescence Go is a unique take-home solution that makes teeth whitening accessible to everybody for a modest investment.
