Relatively little is known about the power of mitochondria when it comes to anti-ageing, especially in relation to skincare. But one brand out of New Zealand aims to bring the role of these highly functional organelles into the mainstream through their supplement and skincare range, MitoQ.
BEAUTYDIRECTORY sat down with MitoQ CEO Greg Macpherson to find out more about how the range's super ingredient helps slow down the anti-ageing process.
Can you explain the specific ingredient that makes the MitoQ range different from other anti-ageing skincare range?
MitoQ® is a new highly active yet gentle cosmeceutical skin care range and also the name of the proprietary key ingredient in the range, MitoQ®.
Powered by MitoQ the world’s first mitochondria-targeted antioxidant, it works to re-energise the mitochondria, often called our ‘cellular batteries.' MitoQ is significantly more powerful than co-enzyme Q10 and idebenone, and it penetrates the mitochondria.
Mitochondrial function declines as we age. From our thirties, it declines at about 10 per cent, per year, and the aging process accelerates. It is most noticeable on our skin, as our skin cells no longer have the energy to produce sufficient collagen and elastin together with the energy to fight environmental aggressors. Additionally, as the mitochondria’s natural antioxidant system declines, they start to leak free radicals into the cell, where they damage vital cell components and our DNA. By restoring the mitochondrial free radical defense system we achieve the double benefit of both restoring mitochondrial function and reducing free radical leakage into the cell.
The products have been developed to multi-target skin concerns. They work because MitoQ® has been combined with other new innovative clinically proven actives.
The result is that skin cells are reprogrammed to act they did when we were younger, literally turning back time.
How was this ingredient first identified as a super-ingredient for anti-ageing skincare?
The skin is the largest organ in the body and the scientists believed that improving the mitochondria function in the skin would provide heath benefits such as denser more supple skin together with improving the look of the skin in terms of ageing. They tested this hypothesis at the London College of Dermatology and were very positive so the first product MitoQ Cellular Energizing Cream Serum was launched.
What is the importance/function of mitochondria in relation to skin health?
Mitochondria are critical to the health and function of all our cells, including our skin cells. They are responsible for producing the energy they need to grow and function as well as controlling a number of critical processes inside our cells. When our cells are healthy and full of energy, they are able to function at 100 per cent and also reduce and eliminate harmful factors such as free radicals. For our skin, as well as allowing it to properly perform its main job as an effective barrier against the environment this means a more youthful appearance.
What is the benefit of taking MitoQ in supplement form?
When we take MitoQ in supplement form it means that we are getting all of the antioxidant benefits that MitoQ can provide from the inside, as well as the protection the creams and serums provide from the outside. MitoQ is absorbed into all of the body’s organs where it supports healthy normal function and reduced free radical damage. When our organs are healthy and running efficiently, they can better look after each other and our body as a whole. We have more energy, feel better and can stay looking younger too.
How do the different supplements work in the body?
All of the supplements in our range are based on our flagship product, MitoQ 5mg capsules, and all of them contain the same amount of this super antioxidant. What differentiates the additional products in our range is the inclusion of safe, scientifically proven and clinically tested support ingredients that target and support specific organs or areas of concern such as heart, brain, liver or skin health. This allows people to either just enjoy the many benefits of MitoQ by itself, or to provide additional focused support where they need it most.
Are MitoQ products suitable for everyone? Are there any restrictions or limitations?
MitoQ products are safe and recommended for all adults with all skin types. They should not be taken if you have an allergy to CoQ10 or any of the additional ingredients. MitoQ supplements are not recommended for children or for nursing or pregnant mothers. MitoQ is safe to take with other supplements but should be taken on the advice of a qualified health professional if you have a health condition or are taking medication.
Without giving away secrets, are there more products in development for MitoQ skincare or supplements - or is there a completely new range in developments?
We are always working to bring innovative scientifically developed products to the market. Our development team are working on skincare and healthcare products to launch in 2018, together with others in the pipeline to launch in future years.
