When it comes to the Australian fashion blogging scene, there's no doubt Nadia Fairfax is a face to watch. With 79,000 followers and a starring role in the second season of Foxtel's reality series Fashion Bloggers, Fairfax and her blog - Fairfax Journal - are becoming highly sought-after commodities.
One brand that is tapping into her star power is , who have snapped up the fashion blogger for their latest campaign. To find out more, BD chatted to Fairfax about working with , how the campaign is stepping outside the box, and the ins and outs of her blogging career...
Why did you decide to team up with OGX?
OGX promotes health and beauty to every woman - whether your hair is curly or straight or blonde or brown. I really loved that.
What was it about OGX that made you want to work with them?
The incredible scent of the products! Well, that’s not all, but it certainly did influence me. Have you ever smelt the coconut milk shampoo? You must! It is a great company with great brand initiatives.
The campaign with OGX is different from a normal brand endorsement. What does it involve, exactly?
OGX commissioned me to create editorial content inspired by some of their products, and then we filmed the whole process so our audiences could see it all. It was really natural and great to share what goes on behind the scenes. We also came up with an initiative to invite an aspiring blogger to Sydney, where I would give her all my top tips and secrets regarding blogging and style her in a shoot with some of my favourite photographers and hair and make-up directors. This will also be the next TV commercial for OGX. My co-star, Zanita Whittington of Zanita.com, once said to me, "A candle doesn't lose its flame by lighting another candle.” It’s so great to potentially help a young girl to follow her passion of blogging.
How do you choose which brands you want to work with?
There are a lot of opportunities out there - it’s important to choose the authentic ones! If it’s fashion, go for brands that actually fit your aesthetic; and if it’s beauty, it should be for products you use or believe in.
Despite being a fashion blogger, do you find you’re often working with beauty brands?
Most certainly, and I love it! Fashion and beauty go hand in hand.
Why did you launch a blog?
I was already working in the fashion industry and my social media platforms were growing quite quickly. People were taking interest in what I was wearing, where I was eating, what hotels I was staying at... It would have been silly to not start Fairfax Journal. I’m so lucky that my readers have been so engaging and have loved the content I have created (thus far!).
Is it hard being a fashion blogger in Australia, or do you think it's a better market to exist in as opposed to somewhere bigger, like the US?
I think it’s wonderful being a blogger in Australia. The fashion industry is very open-minded when it comes to working with bloggers. In saying that, blogging is global. There are no geographical limits. You conquer your own market and then hopefully conquer the US, Asia, etc.
What sets your blog apart from the competitors?
I’m still growing and learning each and every day, but I believe it has worked really well for me to have my own aesthetic. I don’t attempt to mimic any of the other talented influencers out there. Fairfax Journal is also predominantly editorial, whereas a lot of girls are focusing more on street style.
What have been some highlights/lowlights in your blogging career?
The highlights have been working with some of the nation’s top photographers and hair and make-up artists. It’s so special to be able to collaborate with super talented people. There haven’t been too many lowlights- just hours and hours spent hunched over a computer!
