NYFW beauty trend breakdown

New York Fashion Week has just come to a close, leaving behind a new season of beauty trends. From dirty hair to yellow eyeshadow, read on for BD’s guide to the hair and makeup trends fresh off the NYFW runways.

Glitter lips
At Jeremy Scott, makeup artist Kabuki created a glittery lip look inspired by Scott himself. The lips were initially meant to be created using lip foils glued down with lash glue. M.A.C glitter was put over the top for the finished look.

A similar effect was created at Eckhaus Latta, where statement lips from Kanako Takaseused were made using Kryolan’s Aquacolor paint in blue and white, layered over MAC Clear Lip Glass.

Try: M.A.C Glitter, Australis Glitterati Lip Kit, bodyography Luster Lux Glitter Pigments, Napoleon Perdis Total Bae - Gloss It! Lip Gloss, Rimmel London Lip Art Iridescent Lip Gloss, Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss.

Blurred lipstick
One of K-beauty’s favourite looks was spotted across multiple runways; as blurred, smudged-out lipstick was sported by models at Ulla Johnson and Jonathan Simkhai. At Jonathan Simkhai, Maybelline’s official makeup artist Grace Lee used the brand’s SuperStay Matte Ink in the middle of the lip before smudging it out.

Try: Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink, ModelCo LIQUID LIPSTICK, Estée Lauder X Victoria Beckham Matte Lipstick, Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick Matt Finish, MUD Velvet Matte Lipstick, Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Lipstick.

Pastel eyes
Pastel-coloured eye shadow and check highlights were noticeable makeup features at numerous shows. At Chromat, M.A.C’s Fatima Thomas used pastel yellow in a wash across model’s eyes. At Anna Sui, Pat McGrath put watercolour-like washes of yellow, orange, and pink that blanketed the eye area and faded into the brows, temples, and cheekbones. Taking a break from yellow, pastel-blue and pink Nars shadows were painted on the eyes of models at Rodarte.

Try: Lancôme Spring 2018: French Temptation Collection - Eye Sugar Palette, essence I love colour intensifying eyeshadow base, Chi Chi Eyeshadow Extravaganza Palette, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mono Eyeshadow, Garbo & Kelly Overnight Sensation Eyeshadow Palette

Bold, coloured liner
While bright eyeshadow was spotted all over NYFW; bold, block-coloured liner might be a new trend to watch as models stormed the runway at The Blonds and Zero + Maria Cornejo with neon green and coral winged eyeliner.

Try: Max Factor Excess Intensity Longwear Eyeliner, Bourjois Clubbing Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil, Shu Uemura Lasting Soft Gel Liner.

Gold
Stepping away from bright colours, gold eyeshadow was a feature at Kate Spade, Kim Shuigold, and Tom Ford. At Kate Spade the models wore gold glitter swept across the eyelids in a tribute to the late designer; and at Tom Ford, lead makeup artist Diane Kendall told WWD: “It’s a little bit Seventies with that feeling of super glamorous women.”

Try: Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eye Shadow, Mavala Switzerland Silky Eye Shadow Waterproof, Australis AC Metal AF Liquid Shadows, Napoleon Perdis Loose Dusts, jane iredale PurePressed Eye Shadows, Yves Saint Laurent Couture Palette Collector Gold Lust, Shu Uemura Eye Foil.

Messy, wet-look hair
Put away your styling tools and hairbrush because messy hair is back. At Prabal Gurung, hairstylist Anthony Turner played up the fuzz and teased hair back messily; while at R13 hairstylist Duffy created grungy, 90s-inspired hat-hair waves.

Try: Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray, KMS HAIRPLAY Sea Salt Spray, JUSTICE Professional Sea Salt Spray, Garnier Full & Luscious Volume Booster Texturising Spray, Batiste Stylist – Texturising Spray, Neon & Co Texturising Volumising Spritz.

Keeping in theme with the messy hair Proenza Schouler and Calvin Klein sent models out with wet-look hair. Sported by everyone from Jesinta Franklin to Kim Kardashian, here are our product pics to get the look at home: Alfaparf Milano Style Stories Wet Gel, Green People Light Hold Styling Gel, John Frieda Frizz-Ease® Clearly Defined® Gel, Schwarzkopf Taft Mega Styling Gel Maximum Hold, Cedel Coconut Bay Extra Firm Hairspray, ELEVEN Australia Make Me Shine Spray Gloss.

Flowers in your hair
Alexander Wang tried to bring back the banana clip earlier this year, now designers appear to be attempting to bring back floral hair accessories. At Mansur Gavriel petite daisies were strewn through models’ hair; and at Rodarte, working with florist Joseph Free, lead TRESemmé hairstylist Odile Gilbert gave models a wild, ethereal style that was decorated with a large assortment of flowers and jewellery.

Try: Scunci, Lady Jayne, Toni&Guy Tools.

Pink hair
Off the runway, pink hair ruled amongst the street-style set. Editors and influencers were spotted rocking pinks of every hue – with Millennial pink proving to be the most popular.

Try: Goldwell Professional @Pure Pigments, Schwarzkopf LIVE Colour Ultra Brights Shocking Pink, Clairol Colour Crave Semi-Permanent Hair Colour, Keracolor Color Clenditioner Colour Shampoo Hot Pink.
