bdBLOG: No such thing as too blonde

At the Forever Blonde launch last week, hair expert Kobi Bokshish commented that blondes are constantly on a quest to go blonder and can never be blonde enough.

While I do shy away from platinum, I have to admit I am one of these blondes. I’d say that 90 per cent of times I go to the hairdresser, I’m overheard saying, just a teensy bit blonder than last time, pretty please.”

When I step out of the salon, I tend to be blonde enough for my liking for the next couple of weeks – and then it starts to go downhill. I’m a big fan of a creamy ashy blonde, and after two weeks or so, I feel my hair is throwing orange and copper. Nasty! (Don’t get me wrong though, I do love a redhead, just when that red is on someone else’s head.)

Because it’s unhealthy for my hair, not budget-friendly and simply impractical to be going back to the hairdresser every couple of weeks to get touch-ups, I’ve come to rely on a few at-home products to keep me at peace with my blonde.

My little lifesavers in a tube? The Vitafive CPR Always Blonde Sulphate Free Shampoo, Conditioner and Intensive Treatment. Having tried a wide range of purple-toned products to eliminate yellow, brassy and gold tones, these three products are at the top of my hit list.

The purple tone of the Vitafive CPR products is the deepest I’ve found in a shampoo and conditioner, and I feel that the Always Blonde products return my hair to the perfect blonde after washing. Because it does have such a strong colouring, I only use the shampoo and conditioner every second hair wash – alternating it with a non-blonde-specific product in between.

With the Intensive Treatment, I vary my application. Sometimes I will apply it as a conditioner on its own after using a non-blonde-specific shampoo, but I also often like to mix it in with a non-blonde-specific conditioner to give a less striking result.

While I can’t recommend Always Blonde highly enough, I am aware that some people would prefer a subtler colour-correcting product to eliminate their yellow, brassy and gold tones. For these people, Paul Mitchell’s Forever Blonde range is perfect, as it is gentle enough to be used everyday.
