The importance of playing around

Next time you get told to stop acting like a child”, it may be worth citing recent research pointing to the benefits of being playful and acting young.

Research by National Institute of Play US founder Stuart Brown found that play is just as important for mental and physical health as sleep, eating well and exercising. By incorporating as little as 10 minutes play time into a daily routine can help reduce stress levels and improve the ability to solve problems.

Play is defined as anything we do for the sake of it. It’s about enjoying the pleasure of doing the task without focusing so much on the outcome. Playing is not only critical for the development of the brain but also its health, as play stimulates our pre frontal cortex, the part of the brain that controls executive function,” says evian Live Young expert and leading human performance researcher Dr. Adam Fraser.

Making time to refresh yourself through play is one of the best things you can do for your career, relationships and overall sense of wellbeing. It also allows you to take a step back from issues you encounter during the day and return with a fresh perspective.”

To help demonstrate the importance of acting young and playing, evian has launched its global Live Young campaign that will see a backyard featuring an oversized hills hoist clothesline erected at Martin Place and Bondi Beach. Adults will be able to swing off the clothesline to enjoy acting like a kid again.

The Live Young Backyard will be at Martin Place today, before moving to Bondi Beach on September 28 and 29.
