Natalie Portman’s latest ad for a Dior mascara has been banned in the UK, despite no consumer complaints relating to the ad. The Cut reports that it was actually Dior’s competitor, L’Oréal UK, who reported the ad the UK’s Advertising Standards Agency for allegedly misleadingly exaggerating the effects of the product.”
Parfums Christian Dior, the brand behind the ad, has since explained that the ad’s image was originally intended for a lipstick, but Natalie’s eyes looked so good that they turned it into an ad for Diorshow mascara.
Following the shoot, the brand retouched the image to separate and lengthen the lashes, and replace fill a number of missing lashes. The brand argue that these edits were intended to better illustrate the mascara’s full potential, but the ASA found that the retouching and some of the language in the ad meant buyers could had have unrealistic expectations of the product.
