MBFWA 2012: Carl Kapp

Who: Carl Kapp

When: 7pm, May 3. The Tent, Overseas Passengers Terminal.

Inspiration: "The erotically charged images of Amazonian women by photographer Helmut Newton were a forefront of Carl Kapp’s mind when he was designing his collection Collision. Kapp found inspiration in the work of sculptor John Chamberlain, known for his abstract expressionist sculptures made from scrap-metal auto parts."

Hair: Alan White for ghd

Hair style: "The collection is called Collision and it’s a clash of incredible fabrics with incredible shapes so I wanted to be really powerful with my girls. I’m influenced by Helmut Newton and the strength he had in his girls. But I’ve taken it to another level with my primary influence being Rooney Mara from The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. I think that where she's at is very modern and very now with what’s going on in hair. We’re back with asymmetrical haircuts and power and strength. I’ve made wigs for all the girls and making them look like they have short hair and cutting them all into an 80s wedge. We’ve used ghd Curl Hold Spray to shape the pieces first and then to finish it we’ve got ghd Smooth & Finish Serum and then I’m putting ghd Final Shine Spray on the girls just before they walk out so they look like Madonna in the Rain video where it’s really wet,” says Alan White.

Make-up: Rebecca Prior for

Make-up style: "The make-up look has a bit of a Helmut Newton inspiration, the girls are a little bit androgynous. The hair is dark and there are pieces on the head and it's quite blunt, the make-up in contrast has quite soft edges. While there's a depth to the socket of the eye to the contour of the cheek, there's still a softness as well. What we're doing is putting a bit of a focus on the brow, so it's a little bit of a heavier brow than the girls natural brow - but we're doing it with powder as opposed to pencil as we don't want them to look blocked in. With the eye, we're using a pencil to get a stain effect through the socket of the eye and we're doing it in a neutral brown tone with our pencil Brown Sugar. On the tops of the cheekbones we have some Lip Service, which is our shiny lip product, just to catch the light on the cheekbones and emphasise definition. We also have our Ultimate Contour Palette through the hollow of the cheek to really give more depth. With the lips, we've again used our Lip Service - it has menthol in it. The girls don't have any lipstick on at all, it's just the menthol in the Lip Service that activates the blood flow and brings their natural colour to the surface of the lips," says Rebecca Prior.

"The makeup here is kept super soft to balance the blunt force of the hair. Features are subtly enhanced by contouring with stain and creams; it's about maximising the bone structure. Coverage was applied only where needed to let the real skin shine through," says Napoleon Perdis.

The look was created in a direct collaboration with the designer. We have the traditional French with a modern twist – we have a black French. The base coat is Putty and the smile line is in Black Jack and it is a very medium to shallow smile line,” says CND lead show stylist Cherie Pollard.
