We give an overview of some of the top beauty looks hitting the red carpets and runways this season.
HAIR
Wella Professionals for Peter Som – New York Fashion Week
Inspiration for the beauty look at Peter Som was strong yet minimal. To balance the collection’s high necklines, volume and structure, Wella Professionals lead stylist Christopher Dove created a finished simple, sleek hair look. For Peter Som’s Fall ’13 collection, I felt that the hair look should not distract from the beautiful and intricate detail of the clothing. It needed to be simple, sleek, and elegant because that’s the kind of woman who will wear this clothing, but also able to make a bold statement with minimalistic hair and make-up,” says Dove.
Redken for Marc by Marc Jacobs – New York Fashion Week
Embracing the 1940s screen siren with cinched-in waists and feminine curves, the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection oozed sex appeal. To help invoke the collection’s old Hollywood glamour, Redken global creative consultant Guido Palau created a full head of big curls with a teased crown to give über volume and cheekiness. "The inspiration for this look was a 1940-era woman - an uptown girl - but then we made it more fun, and thus more Marc by Marc. We didn't want it to feel symmetrical or too perfect, so the back-brushing gives a teased effect; a little crazy," says Palau.
Wella Professionals for Mary Katrantzou – London Fashion Week
Wella Professionals global creative director of care and styling Eugene Souleiman created a contrasting style for the Mary Katrantzou show – a geometric short fringe at the front and a raw-textured ponytail at the back. There’s something very medieval about the short boyish fringes, the girls almost look like choir boys, yet when they turn around you get this beautiful, very feminine high ponytail that stands away from the head and swing as the girls walk on the catwalk,” says Souleiman. For the show, Souleiman custom-cut 32 fringes.
David Babaii for Nicole Kidman – Grammy Awards
After styling Nicole Kidman’s hair for the SAG Awards and Producer’s Guild Awards, celebrity hairstylist David Babaii was called on once more to create the actress’ ‘do for the Grammy Awards. For the event, Babaii created a super sleek, blunt bob with no layering. The cut is the foundation for any look,” says Babaii. After cutting Kidman’s hair, Babaii used Instant Straight Smoothing Balm in her hair before running it through the flat iron.

Moroccanoil for Alice + Olivia – New York Fashion Week
Free-spirited braids were created by artistic director Antonio Corral Calero for the Alice + Olivia collection show. Inspired by fantasy street style and a cool sense of personal individuality, models were given two hair looks. One featured hair woven into braids that encircled the head before being swept into loose chignons, the other saw two wide loose braids crossed over at the back and then meeting at the top of the head. Products used included the Moroccanoil Treatment, Heat Styling Protection and Volumizing Mousse.
Wella Professionals for Issey Miyake at Paris Fashion Week
Described by Wella Professionals global creative director of care and styling Eugene Souleiman as the new realism”, the hair look at the Issey Miyake show had an ethereal outer-wordly feel to it. The finished look saw hair appearing light and fresh but with an edge. The collection contained some amazing printed textiles showing aerial views of landscapes, like floating above the land looking down. This inspired me to create a look that was incredibly light and organic, that moved beautifully on the catwalk and had energy to it,” says Souleiman.

MAKE-UP
Estée Lauder for Derek Lam – New York Fashion Week
Working with Derek Lam to produce the beauty look for his Fall 2013 collection show, creative make-up director Tom Pecheux created a sophisticated, minimal urban hippie look on the models. The focus is on the eyes and the lips. I placed a highlight of metallic shimmer in the centre of the eyelid to make it appear very like a two-dimensional painting on a canvas. The saturated stain on the lips is very strong and intense – a mix of brown, maroon and burgundy. The skin is very fresh and iridescent, a satin-matte texture,” says Pecheux.
Bobbi Brown for Holmes & Yang – New York Fashion Week
Designer Jeanne Yang reveals that the make-up look for the Holmes & Yang show was created with the modern woman in mind. She might be running around town, but at the end of the day, she looks fresh, feels great and exudes polished beauty,” says Yang. The hero products used to create the 1940s-style make-up look were the Luminous Moisturizing Foundation, and . Holmes & Yang loves a 1940’s look, á la a young Katharine Hepburn. Dewy faces and feminine raspberry stained lips provide a nice balance against the masculine textures of the collection,” says Bobbi Brown.
Maybelline NY for Wes Gordon – New York Fashion Week
With his glamrock London meets opulent Istanbul” collection, Wes Gordon wanted to shake up rich elements such as gold embellishments and fur and give them an undone, street feel. The collection’s edgy vibe was translated into a make-up look that featured a smudgy smoky eye and sexy red lips. Her makeup is imperfect, like she’s been out at a party all night. It’s very rock-and-roll,” says Maybelline New York artist Gato. Key products were the MasterLiner Cream Pencil, Color Sensational Lip Color, FITme Foundation and .
ck one color for Rose Byrne – SAG Awards
global makeup artist Hung Vanngo created a beautiful romantic look for actress Rose Byrne at this year’s SAG Awards. When creating actress Rose Byrne's makeup for the SAG Awards, we wanted to complement the dress she was wearing with a soft romantic smoky eye in pastel shades. Then a bright pink lip added a pop of colour to complete a beautiful and modern look,” says Vanngo.
Rimmel for Katy Perry – Grammy Awards
American singer Katy Perry’s make-up was given a British touch for the Grammy Awards, with her make-up artist Jake Bailey using all Rimmel London products. While she sometimes tends towards a high drama make-up look, Perry toned it down for the Grammys with bronzed eyes and nude lips. The singer had a glowy, warm complexion thanks to a mixture of the BB Cream and Match Perfection Foundation, finished with Match Perfection Bronzer in Medium and Mono Blush in Pink Rose. Eyes were perfected with the , Glam’Eyes Eye Shadow Quad, Glam’Eyes Eye Shadow Monoand . Lips were covered with .
