This year’s summer hair and make-up trends

Make-up and hair trends in Australia are influenced by a wide range of factors. It’s a little bit of a mish mash because we do our own thing a bit as our seasons are a different time to Europe,” says Max Factor national make-up artist Liz Kelsh. I find that we take it and put our own little slant on it.” Whatever the inspiration, each season brings forward new exciting looks for hair and make-up. Here’s a look at this season’s top trends…

Key make-up looks

This summer, make-up is all about experimenting. Break the rules!” encourages senior make-up artist Nicole Thompson. This season it’s all about finding your right fit in make-up, and don’t be afraid to try new things.” SAX product development manager Angelique Snellekz agrees, encouraging consumers to experiment this summer with bright hues and lighter textures.

Eyes

This season’s eyes are moving away from the smoky eye and more towards three trends - metallic sheen, bold colour or neutral hues. Anything with metallics is going to be really big. It doesn’t have to be disco metallic, more a sophisticated metallic – it’s almost like a satin colour as opposed to glittery,” says Kelsh. L'Oréal Paris make-up director Rae Morris agrees, revealing, there’s a little bit of metallic going on in the eyes but there’s also a strong thing with colour. We’ve had so much smoky eye forever, but now it’s a brighter eye.”

Thompson says not to be afraid of doing an eye and a lip this season. She also reveals that on the eyes, a healthy glow of tan, caramel and gold tones look amazing on everyone and are a soft way to compliment your new bright lip.”

When it comes to mascara, Morris and Thompson have different opinions. While Morris says this summer is about very minimal mascara, Thompson thinks that lashes are back!” Morris also revealed other eye trends that are slightly unusual including white eyeliner, eyebrows lighter than your hair colour and using two colours on the eyes at the same time such as a violet wash with orange.

Skin

There are two big trends for skin this summer: a velvety finish and a sexy, glowy sheen. Normally for summer it’s glowy, dewy and creamy, but this season if you look at the Louis Vuitton show and the Chanel show, you’ll see a lot of very softly powdered skin,” says Morris.

Kelsh says summer skin will keep a bit of glow: Gorgeous skin is always in fashion. Not so much matte, a more sheen to the skin.”

Lips

Lips this season are either OTT bold or non-existent nude. For Thompson, it’s all about the fiery lip. On the lips, the perfect universal cherry red lip is back with a vengeance. If red is not your thing, try a pop of magenta or orange to get you some attention,” she says.

Top hair-styles for summer

The major hair trends for this summer are the 40s look, heavy textures, ponytails, topknots and braids. For styling this summer, you’ll find the real textures in hair finishes will still be around. It’s all a little bit undone still,” says L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador Damien Rinaldo. He adds that ponytails are always strong. This sentiment was agreed on by hair director Scott Sloan, who reveals, ponytails are huge. They’ve been huge for all the major runway shows and all the big brand campaigns have been using ponytails. That’s already happening domestically here.” On that same vibe of keeping hair clean and simple, this summer will see a lot of top knots and braids and plaiting, according to Sloan.

Kevin Murphy, founder of , has a different take on hair for this summer, believing the main trend is the nostalgic 40s look. Half up, half down with little rolls. Rolling your hair under to get it to look like it’s a bob is going to be really popular as well.” Murphy also says hair parts will be moving to the side this summer, with little clips used to fix in place – Bonnie and Clyde style.

Hair colour

Hair colour is set to be bold, says Sloan, moving away from the past years’ trend of natural tones. People are going for it a little bit more with the hair colour now. To be minimalist is really out now, it’s all about being bright and colourful,” agrees Murphy. You’re going to see navy blues, greens, anything primary, anything fake.”

And for those not keen on a pink strip in their hair? Popular tones for this summer are going to be warmer, with lots of reds, copper and auburn. There will also be lots of two tone colouring and dip dyeing colour – where ends are literally dipped into a different colour.

Hot cuts

Goldwell Professional ambassador Sharon Blain from The Art of Hair sums up the top cuts for summer as short fun pixie cuts, choppy layered mid-length bobs and deconstructured layered long hair. Add a sexy long fringe, a big bouncy blow dry and you are bang on trend for the coming season.”

Rinaldo says that cuts are going to go really short this summer as consumers build confidence in getting a pixie chop. Sloan says the cuts will be very defined. Short hair cuts are going to have some really bold strong outlines like little blunt fringes and solid outlines.” Murphy reveals we are also set to see heavy 60s-style fringes, mop cuts and long grown out bobs this season.
