We’re a rather simple nation. A nation of topknots in the hair, masters of the five-minute make-up application, and regulars of the T-shirt, shorts and thongs combo on the weekend. If it’s comfortable and easy, it’s a winner in our books.
Unfortunately we sometimes need to swap comfort for dress appeal (think tight jeans, body con dresses and high heels), and this can turn us from the fun-loving people that we’re renowned to be into a bunch of grouches.
Stayfree recently surveyed 1000 people to find out what gives us the most discomfort. The survey discovered 58 per cent of Australian women often feel constricted by the things they wear with the most annoying discomfort was found to be the bra strap that refuses to stay up, while bunching underwear and wedgies came in a close second.
With 60 per cent of Australian women finding it hard to admit to discomfort because they don’t want to be seen as complaining, Stayfree has kicked off a campaign urging women to speak out against the thing they find to be a pain, includes the discomfort felt from their pad.
Women have been keeping quiet about the discomfort caused by their pad for too long,” says Johnson & Johnson Pacific women’s health manager Michelle Forster. Our research showed that 75 per cent of them actually had to secretly adjust their pad during their period. We want to create a movement – to encourage women to stand up and say ‘no more’ to just putting up with the things that make them uncomfortable.”
Working in an all-girl beauty office, we tend to (over)share a lot of things that are probably not passé in a traditional work place. And, although this is something that I love about our office, I still don’t think I’m up to walking into work and saying Hey girls, just pulled out the wedgie caused by my menstrual pad.” But then again, if Stayfree’s campaign takes off, that could all change.
