Like a kid on their first day at a new school, new beauty ingredients can have a tough time figuring out where they fit into the ever-competitive skincare market. And just like the schoolyard, it’s always the popular kids that get picked first. I’m looking at you, vitamin E.
Recent years have seen various oils – like argan – become de rigeur in the beauty industry. But now there’s a new kid on the scene in the form of avocado oil.
Avocado oil has the same features and lightweight feel as more popular oils, but with even more benefits,” says Greg Ferrett, managing director of Avado Organics, a brand that uses avocado oil in every one of its products. When people have thought of oils traditionally they imagine the consistency of canola and olive oils. That’s why I think rosehip oil has been so popular, because it doesn’t feel that way. There are plenty of fashionable products out there but avocado oil is a great one,” Ferrett explains.
Rich in phospholipids, vitamins a, B1, B2, B5, D and of course E, potassium, essential fatty acids and fruit acids, avocado oil is made up of some impressive characteristics, the benefits of which have been proven in a 2010 study published in Archives of Dermatological Research. The research showed that avocadoes have the unique ability not only to reduce UV damage and inflammation, but to actually reverse sun damage as well.
[Avocado oil] doesn’t just conceal sun damage, but actually reverses it,” reiterates Ferrett. There’s no other oil in any market anywhere else in the world that does that.”
Avocado oil has abilities that extend far beyond the treatment of sun damage and is also proved to work its magic on eczema, which is where the Avado Organics story began. Tammy Fenner, the founder of the brand, had a daughter suffering from sensitive skin and serious eczema from a young age. Fenner’s mother ran an avocado farm and kept telling her of the benefit of the oil, to the point that Fenner decided to add a few drops of it to her daughter’s bath. This was the only effective way she could treat her daughter's eczema.
One of the best things about avocado oil is that because it’s a 100 per cent natural product, it doesn’t generate allergies in the way synthetic ingredients can. With an ingredient like pawpaw, for instance, there are a lot of skin types that will have an allergic reaction to it,” says Ferrett. There’s no skin type that reacts to avocado oil.”
Ferrett says avocado oil is particularly beneficial to the Australian market because of the amount of sun we’re all exposed to. Not only that, but it also helps maintain the chemistry balance of the skin and encourages the growth of elastin,” says Ferrett. It is widely known that fish oil contains omega-3 essential fatty acids. When applied topically, the omega-3 in avocado actually provides more benefits to the skin than fish oil capsules. The oil is also high in sterolins, which studies show have the ability to reduce the occurrence of age spots and help soften the skin. If that’s not enough, it also increases the production of collagen and prevents skin ageing.
Avado Organics, which has recently partnered with Priceline stores, aims to educate people on all these benefits by offering testers of avocado oil in the beauty chain stores. We’re confident that once people try it on their skin, they’ll become converts pretty quickly,” says Ferrett.
Perhaps one of the most remarkable facts about this ingredient is that it is used in oncology departments around Australia to treat skin cancer patients. The avocado oil is used to help soothe and heal the skin with minimum irritation.
With a report card like that, it won’t be long before avocado oil proves it’s got the beauty and the brains to turn the skincare industry on its head.
