bdBLOG: Blondes not having fun

Kermit might sing that’s it’s not easy being green, but I doubt he’s ever tried being blonde. And while putting up with the blonde jokes comes with the territory, the slightly annoying quips pale in comparison to the other troubles you put yourself through to be a blonde bandit.

For those not blessed with the fortune of having naturally creamy-blonde hair (and let’s face it – that’s most of us), maintaining these coloured locks can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth.

Regular trips to the hairdresser are a must (I go every six weeks). Miss one week and you start to look more rock ‘n’ roll and a little less glamorous beach babe.

Purple shampoo and conditioner is important for keeping away the brassiness, just don’t use too much or you end up with grey/purplish hair that only works for the quirky kids - think the likes of Lily Allen.

Treatments, treatments, treatments. It’s called dying for a reason when you’re applying the bottle blonde. Avoiding dry, dead locks is a mission on its own.

Finding the perfect blonde. I’ve been dying my hair blonde since year 10 (which was a very long time ago!). When you consider I’m heading to the hairdresser every six weeks, that’s a LOT of trips to the hairdresser. Despite the countless appointments, you never know if you’re going to walk out with the exact hue you were hoping for – even when you’re using the same hairdresser.

Watch out in summer when too much swimming in chlorine dulls the colour – or makes it green, and don’t even think of putting a colourful semi-permanent through because that bad boy’s never going to wash out.

But while it all sounds like doom and gloom, I have to say – it might not be easy being blonde – but damn it looks good.

What’s the toughest part of maintaining your hair colour? Is there a product you can’t live without?
