bdBLOG: Going bare

I am a laser convert. A year ago I was bribed to a laser information session by my friend with pleading promises of nibbles and champagne and reassurances that there would be no obligation to sign up for any services.

I walked out of the centre feeling like a pushover. Not only had I gorged in way too much fried finger food, but I’d somehow been convinced to sign up for my first session of a hair removal treatment that I was slightly dubious about.

Two weeks later – with hairless underarms as soft as a baby’s bottom – I was hooked.

And while laser may have been around for a few years, more and more people have joined me in discovering the delights of this treatment.

Being hair-free no longer appears to be a ‘trend’, but the norm,” says Dr Susan Austin from the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia (CPSA). Our doctors have seen a steady increase in the number of patients requesting permanent hair reduction, with the ‘Brazilian’ still amongst the most popular treatments for female patients.”

According to a study by the CPSA, 25 per cent of consumers who have undergone a non-surgical cosmetic procedure have opted for laser or Intense Pulsed Light treatments for permanent hair removal. A further 31.5 per cent of respondents to the CPSA survey say they have considered having laser or IPL hair reduction treatments in the future.

And it’s not just the women that want to banish the hair, with CPSA also reporting an increase in the number of men seeking permanent hair removal.

For men the most popular areas for laser and IPL hair removal are the back, the chest and interestingly, the beard around the neck and cheeks,” says Dr Austin.

Have you been impressed with your laser hair reduction treatments? Were you nervous about getting it done?
