bdBLOG: The thing about hair colour…

Hair colour is a constant source of angst for women. While men generally can’t tell two-month-old regrowth from carefully constructed balayage, women can discuss for hours the merits of forking out hundreds for a subtle change in shade.

I’ve been a blonde my whole life. Natural for the first 15 years and– shall we say – enhanced ever since. Now it’s no secret that women can take years to find a colourist they truly connect with and just when you think you’ve found someone you can see yourself being really happy with, one of client/hairdresser parties undergoes a lifestyle change and you’re back where you started.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a long-term relationship with a hairdresser. I fall hard and fast in the first or second appointment, but generally become restless after a couple of trips and move on in search of something better. In all my years of having my hair coloured, I’ve never really had a colourist that made me go wow”. That’s why when I was given the opportunity to see Stephen Roser, award-winning colourist at the Lattouf Style Off Awards last month, I began planning our future together before I’d even met the man.

is a relatively new establishment, having only opened its doors about three months ago. Intimate and tranquil, the salon has a boutique feel about it, which is unique considering it’s one of 11 Lattouf locations around Sydney.

Stephen’s softly spoken voice and gentle nature won me over immediately. He discussed my hair colour with the care and interest one simply can’t get from even the most patient girlfriend. After a blue oil massage by one of the other hairdressers, Stephen got my colour underway. As Stephen carefully weaved Goldwell Professional lowlights through my hair and painted a slightly lighter shade on my ends, I was repeatedly attended to by staff, who ensured my glass was never empty and my magazine selection never stale.

By the end of my appointment, I felt relaxed, confident and extremely happy with the results. Lattouf has managed to create a quiet oasis within the surrounds of Sydney’s Walsh Bay – the result of attentive, passionate staff and a team that clearly work very well together. Oops, there I go again, falling in love with my colourist. Although something tells me this could be a long-term affair…
