If you could choose to have perfect skin or a Miranda Kerr-esque waistline, which one would you opt for?
For someone who has spent my whole life majorly concerned about my waistline, until recently I would have hands-down picked a washboard stomach over anything else I could change about my appearance. That was before I started noticing dull skin tone, wrinkles around my eyes and the firmness of my skin start to weaken. Now, my decision is a lot tougher.
But while I struggle with the answer, it seems the majority of Australians are more concerned about their skin tone and texture than they are about their weight, according to a new study conducted by the Cosmetic Physicians of Australasia and cosmetic medicine website Costhetics.
The study of 751 people found that skin tone was the most concerning aspect of appearance for 58.5 per cent of respondents. The appearance of fine lines ranked second on 38.9 per cent, followed by loss of volume in the face and weight both on 34.7 per cent.
Those respondents aged 21-30, 58.3 per cent nominated skin tone as their number one concern when it came to their appearance, followed by weight on 44.1 per cent, stomach on 41.7 per cent and buttocks and thighs on 34.6 per cent.
While the survey results may surprise some, they’re consistent with what CPSA doctors see in their practices,” says Dr Susan Austin from the CPSA. Often, poor quality skin tone, such as blotchy skin, redness and sun spots can be even more ageing than wrinkles, which explains why skin tone rated so highly among respondents.”
Seems skinspiration beats out over thinspiration this time round…
