bdBLOG: Make-up sales soar

It’s summer time in the US and when it comes to make-up purchasing, the country is definitely shiny, happy people.

Prestige beauty sales are skyrocketing in the US with women clamouring to get their hands on make-up for dramatic eyes, bold nail colours and soft lip shades, according to beauty market research by The NPD Group.

Sales from January through to May 2011 increased by nine per cent from the same period the year before to $1.4 billion in US department stores.

And the news just keeps getting better for US beauty brands, with results showing make-up in May posted its strongest dollar performance in the last three years.

Prestige make-up sales are soaring this summer due to the strength of offerings that are easy to adopt and enticing with fashion, fun as well as functionality,” says senior global industry analyst Karen Grant.

The biggest growth in the prestige make-up category was nails, which increased 57 per cent in dollar sales compared to the same period in 2010.

The second highest segment to record a strong growth was eyes, which gained nearly 10 per cent dollar growth for the reported period.

Findings also showed a strong trend for pink make-up, with pink lipstick dominating the lip segment.

With every week bringing a new exciting beauty colour and product to try, there’s no wonder the make-up market is soaring.
