2014 was definitely the year of the YouTube beauty vloggers. From setting up a video camera in their bedroom to becoming household names, vloggers began transforming their make-up hobby into a day job.
Now, online video service Vessel is offering YouTube stars the potential to boost their revenue if they can guarantee a three day head-start on content.
Created by ex-Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, the service will offer subscribers access to content from popular YouTube stars three days before it appears anywhere else. Subscribers will need to pay $2.99 per month to gain access to the service.
Content producers would receive revenue through 60 per cent of the subscription rate going into a content creator pool, with the pool split according to traffic proportion. Content creators can also elect to put their content on a free ad-supported service, which could see them receive 70 per cent of all advertising revenue sold against their content. YouTube is believed to offer its content creators a 55 per cent split, according to AdNews.
Kilar estimates that the early stages of the service could see content creators receive approximately $50 per thousand clicks via the service.
“Today, most creators and content owners put their content on the free, ad-supported web in the hope that they can create a sustainable business. However, they often only earn low, single-digit dollars for every thousand views their videos generate,” writes Kilar.
“At this level of monetisation (or even five times this level of monetisation), it is extremely challenging – if not impossible – for most creators and content owners to realise their creative and professional ambitions if this is the sole manner in which they release their content.”
