This week Fairfax Media told staff it will be cutting 159 roles to shift focus from print to online media. The move will create 174 new editorial positions, which staff will have the chance to re-apply for.
Executive editor Sinead Boucher says the new newsroom structure will be digital-centric and geared towards audiences and content.
"We are boosting our reporting capability in small and large communities, and reorganising our newsrooms and teams so they can deliver the highest quality content - in all its forms - to our audiences. It's a different way of operating, geared towards building a dynamic, responsive newsroom," says Boucher.
EPMU organiser Anita Rosentreter says the decision has come as "a bit of a surprise to some people but others expected it".
