Why this year’s NZFW is not just about fashion

The fifteenth New Zealand Fashion Week has started and as expected, there is plenty of designer clothing and jaw-dropping hair and make-up. But the focus is not solely on the clothes and beauty this year, with a spotlight placed on the event’s partnership with NZ-led social enterprise, Child Labor Free.

Child Labor Free (CLF) is the world’s first global system that allows companies to have their supply chains independently certified as ‘Child Labor Free’. Qualifying brands are then able to display a mark of certification. Hailwood, Kate Sylvester, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Nom*D and Ruby are working with the organisation already.

New Zealand Fashion Week director Dame Pieter Stuart tells Scoop: “This year, NZFW is thrilled to be partnering with Child Labor Free, which is tackling the very serious issue of businesses working ethically throughout the world. It is something I personally feel very strongly about and we are proud to be part of the CLF journey.”

Adding to this, Child Labor Free co-founder and CEO Michelle Pratt spoke at the opening of NZFW, saying: “We are so thankful for the incredible support we’ve received from NZFW and the designers. We’re now looking forward to working with other brands in New Zealand and globally as they start their journey to becoming child labor free.”
