Mel Mason on leaving Girlfriend and her new role

After making her way up the ranks at Girlfriend magazine from beauty writer to features and beauty editor, Friday saw farewelling the title to take up the exciting role of digital style writer at MTV.

With her first day on the job today, Mason kindly took five minutes out of her initiation to tell us all about the new position.

Congratulations on your new role. Can you tell us what you will be doing?
I’ll be covering all the fashion, beauty and lifestyle content for MTV.com.au.

Will you still be working in beauty?
Yes, in part – although my role now extends to fashion and lifestyle as well as beauty, and is currently more based around news and celebrity rather than product.

Are you sad to be leaving the Girlfriend team?
I am so sad - Girlfriend is like a little family! But I’m excited to get into the digital space and work for such an amazing international brand.

What appealed to you about the position at MTV?
The digital aspect was a huge drawcard, but also working for a brand known globally and being able to contribute to their Australian arm is such an amazing opportunity.

Is it a big team?
Nope! There are three content writers including myself and we all work across different pillars of the website, then there’s a digital editor above us.

Are you nervous about making the move from print to digital?
A little because it’s so much about being onto breaking news as quickly as possible, with clean content that you can turn around quickly – whereas with magazines you’re looking long-lead and focusing on content that is still going to be relevant in three months time. But that’s also really exciting to me.

Is working in digital over print something that appealed to you? If so, why?
It wasn’t so much “this over that” as much as I really liked the kind of content I would be creating at MTV and have always loved the brand.

Can we expect a little of that beloved MM spice in your writing at MTV?!
Hahaha yes!

Who will be taking over your role at Girlfriend?
As yet there is no replacement for me at Girlfriend, so in the interim before a replacement is announced, PRs and brands can contact editorial co-ordinator Lucy Bode on lucy.bode@pacificmags.com.au.
