Like most journalists, Olivia Mackinnon’s career has traversed a few different fields. The former beautyheaven writer stepped into the world of radio in 2014, landing the role of senior digital content producer at KIIS 1065 on the Kyle and Jackie O Show. Mackinnon recently spoke to BD about her divergent media career, as well as her recent foray into freelance.
How are you finding working at KIIS FM?
It's amazing! It's fast, it's furious, it's without boundaries – which makes it kind of scary at times, but seriously exciting to work in every day. And working so closely alongside the biggest radio duo in the country is an honour.
What are the differences between the beauty world and radio?
Less lipstick! Haha. I'm still obsessed with beauty and while I do get to dabble in it whenever I feel like the right angle comes along, it's not quite enough to satisfy my addiction. Working for a radio website means I can write about whatever I feel like will rate the best – from Harry Styles' new haircut, to the [2014] Sydney siege, to the product that will let you fake tan in the shower. It's open-ended and I love the freedom, but beauty was my first love, and while my radio mistress ticks all of the right boxes, we all know first loves never really leave you.
Do you enjoy working with Kyle and Jackie O?
It's seriously the best. I might be snapping selfies with Giuliana Rancic one day and filming videos with Meghan Trainor the next – or pranking back the boys from Angry Dad. The creativeness that comes from Kyle and Jackie O is unparalleled – there's a reason these guys are the best in the business – arguably two of the best in the world. They put the listeners first and go to the ends of the earth to entertain. They're also two of the nicest people you'll ever come across, that surprises some – but it's true.
What do you miss most about beauty?
The people. Mentors I looked up to, like Andrea Ferrari, Jackie Maxted and Elisabeth King. The events, the exciting new product launches and my beautyheaven/BEAUTYDIRECTORY team. They're the best in the business.
What's spurred on your interest in dabbling in some freelance?
I love writing, that's why I've buried myself in it for the past eight years. I love telling stories and writing outside my comfort zone, which is what the past year and a half has taught me.
What kind of freelance work are you interested in pursuing?
The sky's the limit. Since working at KIIS, my beauty writing skills have extended to lifestyle, fashion, travel, breaking news, celebrity and entertainment news. I've even written about finance. That was a scary day – but a rewarding one too.
