Glosses, stains, balms, lacquers and lipsticks: we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to glamming our pouts.
Beautiful, glowing skin for Summer just needs one thing: a swipe of standout lip colour. Take a style cue from the runways of New York, Milan and Paris and try out the hottest lip hues of the season. Whether you like matte, shimmery, glossy or sheer, there’s a shade and formula to suit everyone. Wearing lipstick is such a person thing: for some it evokes the feeling of glamour and confidence, while others might feel it makes them look older. Don’t fear! Simply find your preference in a formula that suits you and wear it with confidence. You may like a strong impact or colour straight from the bullet, or a lacquer of the same hue but with a glossier finish. If you prefer to play up your eyes, keep your lip colour soft by swiping on a sheer shiny gloss. For some who favour the barely-there look, tinted lip balms are perfect to apply throughout the day: they treat lips, add a subtle colour pay off and are the best base for any punchy lip pigments.
HOW TO: APPLY A BOLD LIP
If you’re after a quick (and easy) way to change up your everyday look, try adding a swipe of vivid lip colour. Whether you’re a fan of classic red or something more fun like a fuchsia or tangerine, we called on ’s National Training Manager, Sheryll Thompson, to give us her tips on how to master a fabulously bright lip.
STEP 1: ‘Start with clean, smooth lips,’ says Sheryll. The last thing you want is for them to look dry and flaky. Not only will it feel uncomfortable it will draw attention away from the beautiful colour. You can use a lip scrub, a wet flannel or a soft toothbrush to gently slough off dead skin, resulting in a soft, smooth (and visibly more plump) canvas to begin.

STEP 2: ‘Next apply primer,’ says Sheryll. You can use a lip primer or moisturising balm to hydrate the skin as much as possible. Be sure to let it soak in before removing the excess and applying your lipstick.
BD Recommends: Elizabeth Arden .
STEP 3: ‘Begin by using lip liner on the top lip, starting at the centre curve then round out the top edges of the ‘V’ to soften the cupid’s bow,’ says Sheryll. ‘Next start at the outer corners of the lips, drawing small, feathery strokes to meet the centre bow. Repeat this process on the bottom and always blend the liner inward so that when the lipstick wears off, you won’t be left with just an outline.’
BD Recommends: Elizabeth Arden , Moisture Mist Lipliner Pencil, Dr.Hauschka .
STEP 4: Now the fun part – applying your lipstick! ‘Try using a lip brush for a more precise, blended application,’ says Sheryll. However, if your lipstick is brand new you can just as easily apply it directly, but be sure to stay inside the lip line you’ve just created.
BD Recommends: Shiseido Portable Lip Brush, Living Nature Lip Brush.
STEP 5: To finish up, make sure the outline of your lip is clean and defined. If you’ve made a mistake don’t worry, simply use a cotton bud to fix it up or take a small concealer brush with a tiny bit of concealer on it to gently trace around the area. This trick will also help prevent your lipstick from bleeding. And Viola, your bold lip is complete!

TOP TIP: Want the look of bigger lips? No problem. ‘Try applying a light, shimmery gloss to the centre of the lips, over the lipstick and blend outward,’ says Sheryll. ‘The gloss reflects light and helps the lips appear fuller.’
BD Recommends: Elizabeth Arden , Synergie Minerals .
