2017 looks set to be an exciting year for Sarah Brooks-Wilson. After working in the Australian beauty media for 16 years she is making a move to Malmö in Sweden on 2 February. BD sat down with Brooks-Wilson to find out more about what she'll be doing once she's settled into her new home.
Why are you leaving for Sweden?
My husband has been heading up sustainability for IKEA for the past four years and is now moving into a global role at head office.
What will you be doing while you are over there?
I’m definitely going to take some time out and settle into a new culture and learn the language. I have 100 hours of Swedish lessons curtesy of IKEA! There are a lot of new start-up businesses in Sweden who are looking for English writers, so I will definitely tap into that. I would actually love to work for IKEA. It's such a great company and as all the print/styling is generated at HQ it would be great to get involved.
Will you still write for Australia media while you are over there?
Yes, I will continue to freelance while I am over there for The Grace Tales. And, I will always be up for commissions if companies need someone like me based in Europe.
What are you most looking forward to and what will you miss?
I am really excited to live a European life. Just being able to hop on a plane and be in say Paris in an hour will be amazing. And, I can’t wait to be closer to my family. To have mum and dad an hour away instead of 24 will be life changing. It’s such an amazing opportunity and while our children are still little, it's the perfect time. I will be incredibly sad to say goodbye to all the wonderful friends I have made over the 16 years of being in Sydney. Friends that I know will be friends for life, no matter where I am in the world. I’ve had such a great time and I have been so lucky to work with so many inspiring, talented, lovely people that have made my working life so much fun. I will miss them.
