New research published in Spectator Health has discovered that a compound found in foods like blueberries, red wine and black tea can prevent influenza symptoms.
Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine, who conducted the study on mice, believe that the reason for this is a shared plant flavanoid compound called “clostridium orbiscindens…that produces a metabolite, and has a positive effect on immune response”.
In short, the shared something that’s found in red wine and black tea can help gut bacteria fight infections and prevent severe influenza.
While it isn’t recommended that everyone start skolling red wine as soon as the first flue symptoms hit, it is possible that a glass of red wine might just fend off the sniffles if you have the right gut bacteria.
