Sulfates and parabens are chemicals found in beauty products. Used since the 1950s, they prevent bacteria and act as a preservative in deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, cosmetics, skincare, and more. Specifically, parabens are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid. This group of preservatives are extremely effective in all types of formulas, such as shampoos, lotions, deodorants and lubricants. Due to their functionality and low cost, parabens are used in the majority of skincare and cosmetic products.
A sulfate is a salt that consists of a sulfur atom, four oxygen atoms, and some other form of counter ion. In personal care, the term ‘sulfate’ is often shorthand for a very specific type of a sulfate-containing compound. Sulfates are very efficient cleansers used in shampoos, body washes, and toothpastes.
