Thanksgiving may traditionally be an American holiday but the day that follows – Black Friday – has become one of the biggest active shopping days the world over.
The globalisation of the retail sales bonanza owes a lot to e-commerce with consumers from Hong Kong to Honolulu cashing in on big savings over the internet. The shopping surge is so great that many retailers offer discounts over the weekend and into what's known as Cyber Monday, a sales day for eager internet shoppers specifically.
Digital discount experts Picodi has shared its data from last year's Black Friday to Cyber Monday sales to give in-depth insight into how the world spends its cash on these particular days of the year. Here are its findings from Australia:
- The percentage increase in daily transactions on Black Friday was a massive 400% in Australia (compared to all other days of the year).
- The most popular categories when it comes to purchases are (in order): fashion, electronics, books, perfume, for kids, cosmetics, house and garden, food delivery, health and beauty, and animals.
- In terms of the best loved brands in Australia, the top spot goes to Myer followed by Big W and Dick Smith.
Picodi reports that it's clear Australian consumers definitely know what Black Friday is and how to make the most of it. So get ready to some major shopping splurges.
