MECCA partners with Indigenous Australian artist for holiday collaboration

MECCA's highly anticipated holiday collection is here, and for the sixth year, so is the art partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

For 2021, MECCA Brands and NGV have collaborated with Indigenous Australian artist, Naomi Hobson, to create stunning limited-edition artworks that will adorn the holiday packaging.

As a Southern Kaantju/Umpila artist, Hobson expresses her and her ancestor’s connection to their traditional lands through a vivid colour palette and abstracted forms.

“My Aboriginality is what grounds me,” said Hobson. “Through art I get to freely express all of this and I can share my creative freedoms in a contemporary way.”

“Working with MECCA has given me more depth to my voice, I am representing my life in this collaboration. I see my rivers, my grasslands, and the characters of my people. Through the brushstrokes, I can see my Country,” she shared.

Hobson’s artwork will be featured on 12 different variations of MECCA’s luxury gift boxes and bags, as well as MECCA’s signature line collections, with packaging designs for 37 Mecca Cosmetics and MECCA MAX products, for the first time.

Hobson joins Claudia Moodoonuthi as the second Indigenous Australian artist MECCA has collaborated with during the six-year NGV partnership.

“MECCA’s generosity has enabled the NGV to acquire works of contemporary female Australian artists since 2016, and for this we are immensely grateful,” said NGV director, Tony Ellwood AM.

MECCA Holiday 2021 launches in Australian and New Zealand stores and online at mecca.com.au / mecca.co.nz, on October 28, 2021.

Naomi Hobson’s artwork will be on display at the NGV Australia from late 2021.
