With every New Year comes a multitude of new trends to experiment with. From the clothes we wear, to the shoes on our feet and the handbags we carry, even the way we take care of our skin and apply our makeup often requires an updated approach. This coincides well with the ‘New Year, new you’ philosophy by allowing us to mix up routines, try new looks and feel inspired by the year ahead.
When it comes to personal appearance, one of the best ways to embrace a new you in 2022 is to revamp your hair – be it colour, cut or new styling techniques.
Below, we outline some of the top trends this year, according to experts interviewed by Today.
Long layers with volume
According to celebrity hairstylist and curl expert Ona Diaz-Santin, rigid cuts and styles are things of the past. Whatever your preferred style, stylists are opting for more movement and layers than ever before.
In fact, Santin says there will be an increase in cutting techniques and shapes, featuring soft layering to deliver an effortless look with extra dimension.
"Two of the most frequently used techniques will be slide cutting and texturising,” added professional hairstylist Justin Toves-Vincilione. “While we’ve seen these techniques before, they’re always evolving. This year is no different and we’re seeing these techniques create some of the coolest, low-maintenance haircuts.”

Ponytail extensions
Ponytail extensions are great for short hair, as there are plenty of quality extra-long extensions on the market. These extensions deliver a large variety of texture, length and style options.
According to hair artist and salon owner Illeisha Lussiano, “the most popular styles are long straight sleek ponytails, long braided ponytails, bubble link ponytails and long/voluminous curly ponytails. This can last 10+ days depending on the quality of care that it receives during that time."

Jaw-length bobs
"The bob will always be a classic, but we will see so many new takes on this look in the coming year," said Vincilione. "Whether it’s jaw-length with a fringe or chin-length with a middle part, the bob will be big in 2022 – and the shorter the better!"
Vincilione says this cut looks best when fresh, so ensuring you get a trim every six weeks is ideal.

Retro fringe
A structured fringe is going to be all the rage this year, as it gives the hair the illusion of thickness. The look is characterised by choppy ends and plenty of texture to add dimension.
"Hairstyles in 2022 will, without a doubt, pay homage to the iconic looks worn in the '70s," said Vincilione. "The option to wear your fringe or face frame in a shag is one way to get the look while keeping it modern."

Fantasy colours
2021 brought a plethora of light balayage and highlights, but 2022 is set to focus on boldness. And although monochromatic looks are currently trending, Santin predicts colours to transition from pastels to more bold, daring hues.
"I am seeing lots of greens, oranges, bold and vibrant colors, but also an emphasis in placement," said Santin.

The plumped afro
This year is all about embracing your natural hair by adding some extra definition.
"People will definitely be getting creative with dimensional color, bangs and volume to amplify their waves and curls," said Vincilione.
