On the 14th of October, Biossance – a global leader in pioneering sustainable beauty through innovative biotechnology – has launched the inaugural International Squalane Day, in celebration of a project that changed the world.
This day was created to celebrate Biossance’s innovation of the powerhouse ingredient, squalane. A highly stable, mega-moisturising molecule, suitable for all skin types, vegan, cruelty-free, and sustainable at every step of the process.
Prior to this innovation, the industry relied heavily on squalene derived from deep-sea sharks, who were hunted and killed for their livers as they comprise roughly 80% squalene.
The creation of Biossance’s 100% sugarcane-derived squalane (a stabilised version of squalene) sourced from Brazil, now saves more than two million sharks every year and is sold back to over 50% of the beauty industry to use in their products.
The aim of the day is to continue to spread awareness to the wider community and industry as shark squalene still makes up a large percentage of the market globally, which is why Biossance continues to spread the word about using plant-based squalane from sugarcane.
To celebrate the occasion, Biossance hosted media and influencers on the 13th of October, with an installation appearing in the iconic Bondi Icebergs Pool for two days.
Following this, key guests and brand advocates joined together to raise a glass, toasting Biossance for all the good the brand has done and continues to do for our earth.
