bdBLOG: Calling on the fans

With the creation of twitter and facebook – the public is continually being given more and more opportunities to interact with their favourite (or least favourite) stars.

Fans these days are just as able to communicate with celebrities as their own friends simply by posting on their walls or sending a tweet (but don’t expect as many replies as from your real friends”).

But this newfound interaction between celebrity and fan doesn’t just stop at comment posting – fans are now being encouraged to get directly involved in different celebrity projects.

From designing album covers to appearing on Lady Gaga’s shoes, fans are becoming more and more a part of the celebrity existence.

The two latest A-listers who are allowing fans to have a say in a major project is Selena Gomez and Keith Urban.

Gomez has asked fans to help her develop a signature fragrance by going to the site selenagomezperfumes.com to see a list of ingredients for the top, middle and base notes.

I want the base to be rich — I like vanilla and maybe some chocolate,” Gomez tells WWD. For the middle, I’ve smelled raw grapefruit and peach, and the top note’s definitely going to be fruity. I’m going to put up all the [notes] I like and let my fans pick which ones they want to put together. So, it’s going to be something that I like, regardless.”

Keith Urban is also using the help of fans to market his new fragrance Phoenix. From October 4 to November 11, fans will be able to submit a 30-second commercial for the cologne, with Urban to choose the winner. The ad will then be aired on national television across the US.

Do you think this is a smart move by Gomez and Urban? Have you ever had a say in a celebrity project?
