Transgender model lands major beauty campaign

Australian transgender model Andreja Pejić’s career is continually breaking new ground thanks to a slew of impressive gigs flooding his way. Now, Pejić has become the first transgender model to score a major beauty campaign, having just signed on as the face of cosmetics company Make Up For Ever.

Scouted at age 16 working in a Melbourne McDonald’s, Pejić rose to fame after appearing in both the men’s and women’s shows of Jean Paul Gaultier in 2011. She has since walked for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne and Jeremy Scott.

The now 23-year-old Pejić underwent gender reassignment surgery last year and feels her latest role within the beauty industry is a reflection of greater acceptance within society as a whole. She told Vogue, “There are just more categories now. It’s good. We’re finally figuring out that gender and sexuality are more complicated...It is about showing that this is not just a gimmick.”

The announcement of Pejić’s role follows on from fellow transgender models landing leading beauty campaigns - last year Lea T was hired as a spokesperson for Redken, while YouTube personality Jazz Jennings was named the face of Clean & Clear’s ‘See the real me’ campaign.
