Job insecurity continues in the Australian media, with The Australian Business Review predicting Fairfax will see major job cuts by early next year. More specifically the newspaper claims 150 jobs at the Metro Media division will see the chop by May 2016.
Recent weeks have been tumultuous regarding job security thanks to a growth in deep cuts to the publishing house’s marketing and product departments. Following on from these, at a recent AGM Fairfax’s chief executive Greg Hywood signalled there would be further changes to assist in cost reduction. These are likely to hit the company’s titles The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
As part of major editorial team changes, insiders predict The Age editor Andrew Holden will depart, alongside SMH editor Darren Goodsir. There are also whispers that if management fails to make its job cuts target, forced redundancies will be introduced by the May deadline.
