Despite widespread doubts about the future of print, Bauer Media Group has revealed the sector helped to bolster the company’s profits in the past year. The publishing house posted its second-highest turnover in company history, recording sales of €2.316 billion.
Print contributed to the bulk of income at €1.689 billion, with magazine sales making €1.292 billion. The German company remains most successful in its homeland, but sales outside of the nation accounted for 65.6 per cent of total turnover, compared to 64.9 per cent last year. Bauer Media Group is active in 20 countries and sells 1.3 billion magazines around the world.
In comparison, radio was the company’s area of most growth - thanks to recent expansion in Scandinavia and the UK. Bauer has jumped 38.5 per cent year on year in this sector, recording sales of €320 million. Digital has also continued to boom, boasting a turnover of €122 million or a 16.2 per cent growth year on year.
Publisher Yvonne Bauer says the findings reveal print is still the bread and butter of the business: “Our growth is based on innovative products and the constant nurturing of our brands. Print is the platform for our success. In addition, we will continue to expand the pillars Radio and Digital and make further strategic investments in all our business fields.”
